Vegetation sources1. Rodney Ecological DistrictThe Rodney data for the vegetation layer was constructed from the original 1982-1984 Protected Natural Area Programme field survey maps and cards. Polygons were delineated from 1998 aerial photographs and attributes were added from survey maps, cards and the Protected Natural Area (Mitchell et al. 1992) and Significant Natural Area (Julian et al. 1998) reports. They were then reclassified into the regional classes. 2. Awhitu/Manukau Ecological DistrictsThe vegetation of the Manukau and Awhitu ecological districts was initially mapped by Landcare Research in 2002 (Landcare Research 2002). They used monochromatic SPOT satellite imagery to delineate polygons. These were added to by the Auckland Regional Council in 2003 using aerial photography (Auckland Regional Council 2004). 3. Waitakere Ecological DistrictThe original paper copy of the PNA vegetation map for Waitakere (Denyer et al. 1993) was scanned into an electronic form and the vegetation polygons digitised. Attributes were added from the PNA map and then reclassified into the regional vegetation classes. 4. Inner Gulf Islands Ecological DistrictWaiheke Island: The majority of vegetation on Waiheke was mapped through aerial photo interpretation and supplied by Auckland City Council as a GIS file. Attribute data associated with this file was supplied by Dr A. Julian and supplemented with information extracted from a report on ecologically significant sites of Waiheke Island (Fitzgibbon & Slaven 1988). Additional areas not covered by these two sources were classified from Land Cover Database 2 (Ministry for the Environment 2004). Kawau Island: Vegetation classes were drawn from a paper by Mitchell and Park (1983). Ponui Island, the Noises and Browns Islands: Vegetation polygons were digitised from aerial photography and vegetation classes determined by Department of Conservation botanists and field staff. Motutapu, Motuihe, and Motukorea Islands: Vegetation polygons were digitised from aerial photography, supplemented with botanical feature descriptions from Esler (1980). Tiritiri Matangi Island: Vegetation polygons were digitised from aerial photography and vegetation classes determined by Department of Conservation botanists and field staff, supplemented by a report on revegetation ecology of the island (Cashmore 1995). 5. Hunua Ecological DistrictThe Hunua range vegetation map was constructed from GIS polygons contributed by Wildland Consultants (2002). Attribute data from the written report was added to the polygons and they were then reclassified into the regional classes. Any areas not covered were mapped from the Hunua PNA report (Tyrell et al. 1999). Site records for the Manukau City Council section of the Hunua ecological district were provided by the Auckland Regional Council. 6. Kaipara/Otamatea Ecological DistrictsThe digital vegetation data for these ecological districts was supplied by Alison Davis as GIS polygons and database tables. This data is further described within her report on the ecological character, threats and management needs of the Kaipara and Otamatea Ecological Districts (Davis 2002a&b). This data was added to by the Auckland Regional Council and vegetation types were then reclassified into then regional classes. 7. Little Barrier Island Ecological DistrictThe Little Barrier vegetation information was digitised from paper maps included in a report on the island, edited by Hamilton (1961). Vegetation attributes were then reclassified to fit regional classes. 8. Great Barrier Island Ecological DistrictVegetation data was used from the 1982 LINZ Land Inventory NZMS 290 vegetation map series, scanned and digitised by Landcare Research. Base information for producing this layer was sourced from Gardner & Cameron (1980). Vegetation types extracted from this dataset were reclassified into regional classes. 9. Rangitoto Ecological DistrictVegetation polygons were digitised from aerial photography and vegetation classes determined by Department of Conservation botanists and field staff supplemented with geological data. 10. Hauraki, Hapuakohe and Meremere Ecological DistrictsVegetation data was provided by Environment Waikato from their Key Ecological Sites GIS layer 2003. 11. Tamaki Ecological DistrictWaitakere: Vegetation attributes for the Waitakere section of Tamaki Ecological District were provided by the Auckland Regional and Waitakere City Councils as a spreadsheet and digital polygons. It is not recorded how the polygons were derived. North Shore: Data for this section was contributed by S Myers and A Julian, sourced from data collected for the North Shore ecological survey (Myers 2005). Auckland Isthmus: This data was digitised from numbered polygons marked on a paper map, as provided by A Julian from the Auckland City Council, along with an associated spreadsheet of attribute data. Data collected for the Tamaki Ecological District as a whole was supplemented with information derived from the PNA survey report for Tamaki Ecological District compiled by Denyer & Davis (1998). |
