Threatened species

For the purposes of prioritisation, the data contained within the threatened species layer includes only those species that are either acutely or chronically threatened.

Important - this data can not replace a site visit.

This information is shared to help planners and ecologists identify the threatened species that occur in each catchment of the Auckland region. The records are for varying time periods and scale resolutions as explained below.

A record means that the species was found during the particular time period. It does not mean it is necessarily still there.

Field survey coverage effort was not recorded, so absence of species records for catchments may mean it was never found there, or that the catchment has not been surveyed for the species, or the species has not yet been recorded although it may be present.

There is, as yet, no distribution data mapped for threatened bats, invertebrates or frogs.

Acknowledgements

Collection and collation of these records represents a great deal of work from the contributing organisations. Appropriate acknowledgement is therefore required whenever this data is used for external purposes.

Data administrators for each of the data sets are available to help with queries, or additions and corrections to the databases. Their details accompany the source information below.

Data sources

Threatened Plants

Current status of the data in BioConnect: 2003

The post-1970 occurrence of acutely and chronically threatened plants (as defined by Hitchmough, Bull & Cromarty 2007) in the Auckland Conservancy were mapped in the form of locational point data.  In total, 69 threatened plants species were mapped.  Though vascular plants were the focus, two non-vascular plants were included because their exact locations were known.  The classifications in the hard copy document produced for the Nature Heritage Fund have been changed to reflect the revised threatened plant classifications(de Lange et al. 2009), but has yet to be updated in the BioConnect Viewer at this stage.

Sources of data include records previously entered in to the DoC BioWeb database, additional threatened plant data stored electronically at the DoC Auckland Conservancy, records included in the Auckland Regional Council’s threatened plant database, Auckland and Christchurch herbarium records, National Vegetation Survey Permanent Plot data, species lists published in the Auckland Botanical Society Journal and Newsletter, and records from experienced amateur botanists (Tricia Aspin, Maureen Young, Anne Grace and Arthur Dunne).

Threatened Herptofauna

Current status of the data in BioConnect: 2007

Herptofauna data was downloaded from DoC’s BioWeb database. These records have been compiled from the Amphibian and Reptile Distribution Scheme (ARDS). This database holds records from the 1940s through until the present.

Hitchmough, Bull & Cromarty (2007) define the following Auckland species as acutely or chronically threatened:

Chevron skink Oligosoma homalonotum 2 Nationally endangered
Whitaker's skink Cyclodina whitakeri 3 Nationally vulnerable
Pacific gecko Hoplodactylus pacificus 5 Gradual decline
Auckland green gecko Naultinus e. elegans 5 Gradual decline
Omate skink Cyclodina ornata 5 Gradual decline

Threatened birds

Current status of the data in BioConnect: 2004

The threatened bird data was sourced from the Ornithological Society (OSNZ) 1997-2004 Atlas of Bird Distribution (Robertson et al. 2007) in excel format. The spatial resolution of the data must be borne in mind when interpreting this information, as bird distribution is represented by the OSNZ in ten kilometre square grids.

The threatened bird species list and classifications can be viewed at www.bird.org.nz/nzrbn.htm. Only the first five categories of threat status were mapped (Nationally Critical, Nationally Endangered, Nationally Vulnerable, Serious Decline and Gradual Decline).

Data restriction: any use of this data for published or disseminated material (electronic or hard copy) must acknowledge the OSNZ with the following: “Bird Distribution 1994-2004, copyright Ornithological Society of NZ, Inc.”

Threatened Fish

Current status of the data in BioConnect: 2007

The threatened fresh water fish information was sourced from NIWA’s Freshwater Fish Database. More information on this service can be found at www.niwa.co.nz/our-services/databases/freshwater-fish-database.

Hitchmough, Bull and Cromarty (2007) define the following Auckland species as acutely or chronically threatened:

Long fin eel

Anguilla dieffenbachia

5 Gradual decline

Black mud fish

Neochanna diversus

5 Gradual decline

Giant kokopu

Galaxias argenteus

5 Gradual decline

Dwarf inanga

Galaxias gracilis

5 Gradual decline
