Reserves

Current status of the data in BioConnect: 2004

Protected Areas

Protected Areas include the following:

  1. Land under DOC, ARC, district or city council management
  2. Land covenanted by the QEII Trust
  3. Land protected under District Plan provisions

There are many protection mechanisms in place for the preservation of natural values. The reserves map layer is comprised of digital information covering land in public ownership whose status affords it protection from some vegetation clearance, and also protected private land. This includes Crown land, public conservation land administered by DoC, ARC regional parks, district council parks and reserves and QEII covenants. For some Ecological Districts it also includes areas protected under local government District Plans.

Excluded from the reserves layer are local government and Resource Management Act (RMA) covenants and bush bonds, as most were not available in digital form at the time of compilation. All data providers have made significant progress since 2004, when this data was received by DOC, with capturing protected land layers and all Districts have undergone Plan changes. It is intended that these layers will be updated with current data and new covenants added.
